This is the rare and very historic 11 April 1938 edition of the Vienna newspaper Der Montag (The Monday) filled with news of the results of the Volksabstimmung or plebiscite of 10 April 1938.

The big headline says that 99.75% of voters said YES to reunification of Austria with Nazi Germany. The “overwhelming commitment of Austrians to the Führer” is spelled out in numbers that were officially announced by Reichsstatthalter Arthur Seyß-Inquart on the stage in the famous Vienna Concert Hall. Another headline calls it “The Greatest Day in the History of the German Nation”.

The 12-½ x 18-½ inch, 8-page newspaper also has excerpts from the speech by Gauleiter Josef Bürckel who quoted Adolf Hitler, who called it the proudest day of his life.

Photos show pro-Nazi Cardinal Innitzer at the voting station, Reichsstatthalter Seyß-Inquart satisfying autograph seekers, hospital patients casting their vote, and Gauleiter Josef Bürckel visiting the grave of martyr Otto Pianetta who fought and died for the Austrian Nazi movement.
