This is a rare original, historic evening edition of the Wiener Neueste Nachrichten newspaper that was published on Saturday 12 March 1938. It was the day Wehrmacht troops crossed the border into Austria, marking the beginning of the Anschluss, the reunification (literally ‘link-up’) of Austria with Nazi Germany.

The same day Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler arrived in Vienna accompanied by Chef der Schutzpolizei SS-Gruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, Chef der Ordnungspolizei General Karl Daluege and 20+ other high-ranking SS officials. This news, as well as Adolf Hitler’s proclamation which Dr. Joseph Goebbels broadcast on all German radio stations at noon, was on the front page.

On the back of the 12-½ x 18-½ inch, two-sided evening edition there are reports about the new government in Vienna, spontaneous rallies, gatherings and festivities all over Austria in cities such as Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Bregenz. They are accompanied by pictures of Austrians celebrating by waving Nazi swastika flags, Hitler Youth boys with drums and Austrian policeman with swastika armbands.

This rare, 86+ year old 2-page newspaper is in nice used condition, exactly as shown above. It has no odor.
