The meaning of Frohes Schaffen in German is “cheerful accomplishment” and this is a very nice 1942 edition of the Jugendjahrbuch or Nazi “Youth Yearbook” as published by Deutscher Verlag (Publishing) for Youth and Nation in Vienna, the second largest city in Adolf Hitler’s Germany.

These heavily illustrated annual Third Reich Frohes Schaffen youth books focussed on the positive aspects of labor and the resulting comradeship, the Nazi homeland , and the importance of the individual being a part of the future of Germany. After the outbreak of World War II, the concept of soldier life joined the labor focus for the German teenagers these yearly books were published for.

The section called “The Conclusion of Political and Military Decisions” has chapters about Japans road to power with an overview of Japan’s war in Korea, Russia, and China. The attack on Pearl Harbor is addressed in a section called “American Arrogance”. There is a section on Japan’s partnership with Germany and Italy as well as their WW2 victories in the Pacific (Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Burma). This section is accompanied by many maps.

The section called “Ten Years of National Socialist Technology ” compares this subject before and after 1933, the Nazi effort to combat unemployment, Dr. Fritz Todt and his Reichsautobahn, the Siegfried Line, U-Boot bunkers on the Atlantic Coast built to withstand enemy bombing, and the significance economic Four Year Plan. It ends with a lengthy article about the German film industry. Movies with sound, the importance of film directors, the many people involved behind the scenes when making movies, the cutting and mixing of film and sound, etc.
German New Order in the East
Frohes Schaffen covers technical innovations, sport and culture, military events, history and service, leisure activities and the target audience was ordinary young German boys and girls. They were urged to think big, think about freedom, and to take pride in their accomplishments as they were at the forefront of the Nazi revolution.

Dr. Anton Hadwiger assembled the information for this 7 x 9-¼ inch hardcover Yearbook of the German Youth in that portion of Germany called the Ostmark. It has 320 heavily illustrated pages.
There are poignant quotes from Adolf Hitler, patriotic poems and songs, and pictures of Nazi soldiers in action at the East Front, sailor life on a Nazi submarine, battlefield maps, Adolf Hitler Square and the State Theater in Krakau, Day of the NSDAP in Krakau, Ukrainian farmers, Soviet Propaganda, Nazi freeways, the Volkswagen factory at Fallersleben, Atlantic Wall fortifications, film sound stages, famous ice skaters, etc., etc. The image below shows modern movie equipement and explains the mixing sound with film with the help of a stopwatch!
The section about sport includes warnings about too much alcohol and tobacco use, ice skating, swimming, fencing and participation by Hitler Youth boys and BdM girls in sports.

The last section in this 1942 edition of Frohes Schaffen is titled “The Homeland Germany” and includes chapters about Hitler’s World War I military service, Hitler’s speech to the Volksgericht, short stories about soldiers and the homeland, soldier Feldpost, the importance of the role of fathers, etc.

The first section is titled “The Face of War” with chapters about the ferocious battle at Jelnja east of Smolensk, a U-Boot expedition against the enemy, the results of the battle at Narvik, soldier thoughts on the battlefield and while sitting around the kerosine stove, Operation Barbarossa 1941 (with maps), and Erwin Rommel’s victorious battle at Cyrenaika in North Africa (with maps). Much of this material was written by SS War Correspondents, Wehrmacht officers and soldiers as well as Kurt Eggers.

Above the famous Hitler quote from his address to the Hitler Youth at the 1935 Nazi Party Days in Nuremberg. It means that a young German "must be as swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp steel" 
The section called “The Gate to the East” covers the continuation of the implementation of German laws and leadership in the Generalgouvernement and the the progress made so far in agriculture, industry, the youth movement, etc.

The section called “New Order in the East” is about the battle for Germany’s destiny in the east. It covers Germanic history and influences in eastern Europe as well as “Moscow’s Battle against Europe”. There is a section that refers to the Soviet Union as a people’s prison. The German path to New Order in the East includes an explanation of the Reichsministerium in charge of the German occupied eastern territories, their task and goals.

The 7 x 9-¼ inch book is fully indexed in the back. Photo sources include Presse-Hoffmann, Weltbild, Scherl, Tobis Film and others. This 82 year old examples of Frohes Schaffen is complete and in very nice used condition with minor wear to the covers. It has no odor.
