THE 1941 NAZI YOUTH YEARBOOK
FROHES SCHAFFEN

(CHEERFUL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Adolf Hitler in Wien, Die Ostmark kehrt heim
The meaning of Frohes Schaffen in German is “cheerful accomplishment” and this is an exceptionally fine 1941 edition of the Jugendjahrbuch or Nazi “Youth Yearbook” as published by Deutscher Verlag (Publishing) for Youth and Nation in Vienna, the second largest city in Adolf Hitler’s Germany.

These heavily illustrated annual Third Reich Frohes Schaffen youth books focussed on the positive aspects of labor and the resulting comradeship, the Nazi homeland , and the importance of the individual being a part of the future of Germany. After the outbreak of World War II, the concept of soldier life joined the labor focus for the German teenagers these yearly books were published for.

The Werk und Welt section covers modern German factories, Germany’s energy assets and related income, and the need for skilled German youth in Germany industries. There is also a section about building a loudspeaker system, plans to build toys and even BB guns, accompanied by technical drawings.

Cultural subjects include Beethoven and Schubert and the sport section has illustrated chapters about boxing and shooting.

The last section in this 1941 edition of Frohes Schaffen is titled “A Life for Germany” and includes short stories about soldiers, Herbert Norkus (Hitlerjunge Quex), the march to victory on the battlefield, First of May labor celebrations, the new German territories in the East, Narvik, Feldpost, life on the home front, etc.

Frohes Schaffen covers technical innovations, sport and culture, military events, history and service, leisure activities and the target audience was ordinary young German boys and girls. They were urged to think big, think about freedom, and to take pride in their accomplishments as they were at the forefront of the Nazi revolution. The motto of this 1941 edition of Frohes Schaffen is “The Future of Germany needs the presence of strong Kerlen” (young women as well as fellows).
SS report from the East Front
The section called “The Battle for Freedom and Justice” has chapters about the war in Poland, Norway, France, Yugoslavia, Greece, Crete and German naval battles between 1939 and 1941. The last chapter in this section is about the German military advancement in the East.

The section called “New Order of Europe” is about bringing German occupied territories such as Bohemia and Moravia, Eupen-Malmédy, the Alsace, Luxembourg, and Holland up to the same standards (labor, standard of living, etc.) as in Nazi Germany.

This 83 year old example of Frohes Schaffen is complete and in very nice used condition with minor wear to the covers. A girl named Hanni received this book as a Christmas gift from her grandmother, according to the small handwritten dedication on the front fly leaf. No odor.

Dr. Anton Hadwiger assembled the information for this 7 x 9-¼ inch hardcover Yearbook of the German Youth in that portion of Germany called the Ostmark.

It has 404 heavily illustrated pages with chapters about important people in the Reich and citizens participating in its growth and expansion, the accomplishments of National Socialism so far, the National Socialist Labor Service and Organisation Todt, and the new Langemarck Study Program; a three-month college-preparatory program for young workers, craftsmen, and peasants who lacked the high school diploma necessary for university admission.
