This is an obscure, heavily illustrated Third Reich publication with the addresses, specialties and services offered at private medical clinics run by medical doctors in Nazi Germany. The book was published using material supplied by the Reichsverband deutscher Privatkrankenanstalten (RDPK), a national association overseeing private medical facilities in Nazi Germany, run by Dr. Kurt Bieling.
This is the 4th edition of Adreßbuch der Sanatorien, Heilanstalten und Kliniken published in 1938 by Wienkötter Verlag of Berlin-Charlottenburg. The 5-¾ x 8-¾ inch, 180-page softcover book starts with an explanation of the differences between private clinics and sanatoria and that the approximately 750 facilities (large and small hospitals, clinics, sanatoria and insane asylums) that were obligated to provide service to all Germans no matter their social status, as defined by the leadership of National Socialist Germany. Proper healthcare for all and thereby strengthening the German Nation and Race.
The first listing in this 1938 Private Clinic Address Book is Kurheim Prinzenbad in Aachen with Dr. Wehsarg in charge, and the last listing is a private eye clinic in Zwickau, Saxony run by Dr. G. Zetzsche. In between is detailed information for clinics in Berchtesgaden, Breslau, Dresden, Gleiwitz, Heidelberg, Königsberg (Ostpreussen), Lüneburg, Lüdenscheid, Nürnberg, Quedlinburg, Stolp, Zerbst and every German town in between.
Interspersed in the listings is striking and interesting advertising for many of the sanatoria and clinics for diabetics, patients with lung, heart or colon problems, neuroses, rehab facilities, clinics with their own mineral water wells, as well as clinics providing radium baths, short wave light and electrotherapy. Siemens advertised their X-ray equipment and high-quality ultraviolet lamps, pharmaceutical companies advertised their vitamin mixes and dietary supplements, Continental advertised their Silenta typewriters for doctor’s offices and there are ads from mineral water producers and manufacturers of special mattresses and bathtubs, even colon cleanser baths (shown left).
