This is a rare and beautifully made brass commemorative in deep relief very accurately depicting the building in Braunau on the Inn river in which Adolf Hitler was born on 20 April 1889 while his father Alois was working as a customs official there. The medallion shows the building on Salzburger Vorstadt 15, then known as the Gasthof Josef Pommer (reference photo below).

The seldom-seen oversize commemorative we offer for sale on this USMBOOKS web page shows the building from the south side so that the rear window in the room in which Hitler was born can be seen, and there is a beam of light focussed on that window from a swastika above the building. Around the border are the words ADOLF HITLER GEBURTSHAUS BRAUNAU A. INN (Adolf Hitler’s Birth House in Braunau on the Inn River).

The hollow back side of the 62 mm (2.5 inch) medallion has two tacks soldered, one above the other, so that it could be attached to something like a piece of wood or leather. We bought it in Germany years ago exactly as you see it, but suspect that it was once attached to a photo album, a plaque, a piece of the building, or even a piece of furniture. What we do know from many years in this business, is that it is a very unusual piece that was probably made in the early days of the Hitler movement.

Near the end of 2019 the Austrian government finally capitulated and bought the old Gasthof Josef Pommer in which Hitler was born and of all things, decided to "neutralize the politically and historically charged building” and turn it into a police station to deter people from making pilgrimages to it!
