This is a lot of six fine, complete, World War II German aviation photo magazines called Der deutsche Sportflieger (The German Sport Flyer). They are the issues for January 1942, October 1943, November 1943, December 1943, January 1944 and April 1944 with a total of 120 heavily illustrated pages. That monthly Zeitschrift für die Gesamte Luftfahrt (Magazine for All Aviation) was published in Leipzig and Ing. Karl Seyboth was the editor.
The 9 x 12-1/8 inch magazine started publication in 1933 for aviation enthusiasts and sport flyers, but content evolved with more technical information and aviation research, stressing civil to military aviation and these six excellent World War II issues of Der deutsche Sportflieger have a lot of content related to World War II, the Nazi Luftwaffe and their role in the war. Promotions, deaths of well-known and lesser-known Luftwaffe Aces were announced and Nazi pilots receiving the Knight’s Cross were featured.
The original Nazi magazines contain airplane model plans, announcements of new aviation records, reviews of new aviation books, promotions in the aviation world, notable deaths in the aviation world, phantom views of aircraft, airplane crashes all over the world, and recipients of the
Lilienthal prize, for example.
Subject covered in heavily illustrated articles are Japanese long range bombers,
Fliegerhorst Ostmark, the latest aircraft from the Focke-Wulf factory, the development of civilian Junker airplanes, the sinking of the British aircraft carrier
Ark Royal in the Mediterranean after being torpedoed by German U-Boot U-81, the possible military use of helicopters, NSKK championships for the Hitler Youth, the new Me 109, the enormous Blohm & Voss
BV 222 Wiking flying boat, the Italian aviation industry, Major Hans-Ulrich Rudel awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds by Adolf Hitler, the death of Luftwaffe Ace Oberstleutnant Hans Philipp (credited with shooting down 206 enemy aircraft in over 500 combat missions), the meeting of Reichsleiter Dr. Ley, Reichsminister Rosenberg and Reichsminister Dr. Rust with the leadership of the NSFK, the
Me 323 Gigant,
Stukas on the East Front, and much more.
PLEASE NOTE that the January 1942 and December 1943 issues of Der deutsche Sportflieger come without the usual striking color cover.
These issues of Der deutsche Sportflieger are heavily illustrated with photos of Luftwaffe airplane crews, visits by Hermann Goering and other generals to the men of the Luftwaffe serving at the front, Luftwaffe Ju 88 planes returning from the front full of bullet holes, aerial pictures taken after Luftwaffe bombing attacks in Russia, Generalmajor Adolf Galland surrounded by Nazi dignitaries, new Knight’s Cross recipients, General der Flieger Günther Korten - the successor of deceased General Jeschonnek, Oak Leaf recipient Hauptmann Barkhorn returns from his 1000th Feindflug or combat mission, NSFK-Obersturmbannführer Ernst Jachtmann after his new world record, KLM’s Fokker F-24, Heinkel Kampfflugzeug He 111, etc. There are also full-page photo portraits of highly decorated Hauptmann Hans Joachim Marseille, Adolf Hitler (for his 55th birthday) and Oberstleutnant Philipp (after his Heldentod or heroes death).
The December 1943 issue explains why on page 2: damage to the Leipzig production plant as a result of a bombing raid was the reason these two issues were published without covers!
The January 1944 issue even has a photo of USAAF pilot Kenneth D. Williams wearing his Murder Inc. A2 jacket and lists his home street address in Charlotte, North Carolina!
There is advertising by companies such as Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau, Röhm & Hass Plexiglas, Messerschmitt AG, BMW, Arado, Ernst Heinkel, Bückner, Dornier, Junkers, Henschel, UHU (glue for airplane models), etc.
These rare Nazi World War II aviation magazines are complete and in very nice, little used condition an have no odor.
