Reichsstudentenführer SS-Oberführer Dr. Gustav Adolf Scheel

From 1934 onward Scheel worked for Reinhard Heydrich’s Sicherheitsdienst and headed the SD training school in Berlin, and in 1938 he became Inspector for the Sicherheitspolizei (Security Police, SiPo) and SD in Stuttgart. He served as a medical officer during the 1940 invasion of France and then headed the Sipo and SD in Alsace. Later he became the Gauleiter of Salzburg, and he survived the war.

The final day of the Wien Studenten Weltspiele was mostly filled with official winner ceremonies at Schloß Belvedere, athletic demonstrations by Hungarian and German students but there were also a few final running events.

There is a list of winners (men and women) as well as a rare photo of Nazi Minister of Education Dr. Bernhard Rust, Italian Minister of Culture Giuseppe Bottai, and SS-Oberführer Reichsstudentenführer Dr. Scheel. There is a Hoffmann photo of the official champion medal and several pictures taken during different sport events.
The Studenten Weltspiele or International University Student Games were held in Wien (Vienna, the second largest city in Hitler’s Nazi Germany) from 20 to 27 August 1939. The athletic event had participants mostly from nations affiliated with Nazi Germany such as Italy, Japan, Albania, Yugoslavia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Slovakia.

Offered for sale here are the 5-3/4 x 8-1/8 inch program booklets for day 7 and day 8 (last day, Sunday 27 August) of the Studenten Weltspiele with a total of 32 pages, as well as two 8-page inserts with the names of the participants from all countries in all sports.

On Saturday 26 August sport events included rowing, pole vault, shot-put, discus, relay, javelin, high jump, handball, basketball, tennis, fencing, as well as the final soccer game between Italy and Germany (Germany won 3:0), followed by the medal ceremony.

Dr. Walter Slonek was responsible for the content of these daily programs and they were printed by Waldheim-Eberle, the company in Vienna that also produced many editions of Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

Both daily programs are in nice used condition and have no odor. The original owner was a fan of Leichtathletik events and made pencil notes (times, winners, etc.) on three pages.
