NAZI RACIAL ART BOOK |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
KUNST UND RASSE
(ART AND RACE) BY PAUL SCHULTZE-NAUMBURG AN EXTREMELY CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE DEGENERATE ART THAT THE NAZIS CONDEMNED |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This is an excellent example of the rare 6-1/8 x 9 inch, 172 page very heavily illustrated hard cover book ,,Kunst und Rasse (Art and Race) by Paul Schultze-Naumburg as published by J.F. Lehmanns Verlag of München and Berlin, Germany. This book is from the 3rd, expanded edition of 1938.
Schultze-Naumburg was the real thing - a very successful German artist and architect who had done some truly remarkable work, even for the Kaiser. He met Adolf Hitler after World War I and wrote and spoke successfully against the degeneration of art. He joined the NSDAP in 1930 and was inspirational in the general band of Degenerate Art in Nazi Germany.
In the book Kunst und Rasse, Schultze-Naumburg expounds at great length on a central thesis: that which people paint (or sculpt) is what they see. If they are sane, they generally paint things quite beautiful. If they are insane, drugged, or are themselves ugly, they are apt to paint deranged, unrealistic, quite horrible images.
To prove the point, Schultze-Naumburg shows four Rembrandt self portraits from different periods in the masters life. They depict the realistic aging of an average looking person. Schultze-Naumburg then shows portraits by modern degenerate artists and contrasts them with remarkable similar photographs taken of institutionalized half-wits and other deformed human beings.
The book Kunst und Rasse alone made Paul Schultze-Naumburg the darling of art-oriented Nazis and in 1944 he was awarded the Order of the Eagle, a high State honor, in gratitude.
This is an excellent example of a third expanded edition of this rare book. The dust jacket is a color photo copy of an original in our archive.
